What are some key changes of the 2018 Language B Syllabus?
The new course is based on five themes:
1.Experiences
2.Identities
3.Human ingenuity
4.Sharing the planet
5.Social organization
The SL and HL level Written Assignment has been discontinued Students must study five overarching concepts throughout the course: Audience, Context, Purpose, Meaning and Variation. The goal is to improve conceptual understanding Listening comprehension will be included as part of the assessment in paper 2. Students at both SL and HL must listen to three spoken texts and be required to answer listening comprehension questions. Interactive oral activities have been removed from the internal assessment.

Effective visual stimulusAn effective visual stimulus is one that:

- is clearly relevant to one of the five themes in the course
- is culturally relevant to the target language
- offers opportunities for students to demonstrate their international-mindedness
- offers sufficient visual text for students to describe a scene or situation
- allows the student to offer a personal interpretation
- enables the teacher to lead the student in a wider conversation
- is relevant and of interest to the student’s age group.

- "The visual stimulus could be a photo, a poster, an illustration or an advertisement providing any text that appears on the stimulus is minimal and in the target language. The candidate should not have seen the stimulus prior to the individual oral activity.
- The visual stimulus must simply be labelled in the target language only with the name of the theme to which it belongs."
